This week was one of my favourites, I felt a real sense of achievement and was very proud of myself as my internship was drawing to a close, I got hired! I am the first intern to ever be hired at BRIC so this was such an exciting moment. I feel I have achieved so much on this placement and this was the icing on the cake. With this now underway, Bally gave me the opportunity to sort the contracts which was also something new to me. …

We started the week off focusing on client 5 which is the en-suite bathroom design. We split the bathroom designs between the interns and I was given the Master Bedroom en-suite as a task. We were to design for the end of the week, however, other projects came up, doing moodboards, invoices, ordering products. It ended up that I never got around to it until the morning of the presentation, however, with assistance from Bally, we designed the bathroom along with 5 renders and presented on-time, with the clients noting that they loved it.

Our weeks at Bric are very…

With the creative development of BRIC from the previous week, we received great news on the new studio Bally had sought to move to. The responsibility of the redesign for this space was passed on to me and this felt like such a great moment. The creative responsibility I had to express here on behalf of the company was a huge opportunity that I couldn’t miss. I took Bally up on this and started the process straight away. Although this was exciting, we did still have a number of other projects to focus on. We had to manage our time…

This week felt hands on and creative, I felt my voice was being heard in all design aspects which I really enjoyed. We started the week focusing on rebranding. I got the opportunity to sit in on meetings and contribute with the branding company who were helping redesign us. Being able to input in this really made me feel like my opinion was wanted and that Bally cared about how I envisioned the future for BRIC. …

I cannot believe it’s been 6 weeks since starting my placement, I have become a better designer, I think more practically now whereas in uni I’m thinking a lot more theoretically and not about how my design could actually work.

This week has been slow paced as we are in the final stages of a lot of our designs and it’s mostly the admin side of things needing completed, quotes, product lists and orders of products and fabrics.

Paul has given as a side project so we can show as well as practice our conceptual thinking, we are to create…

University offers the chance for group work which I enjoy and have been able to bring across into the team at BRIC. The Interns and I have taught one another skills that have really benefited us as a group. We are able to work with haste and the team while having their own preferred areas of expertise, we have all had the opportunity to educate each other on these new ways of working and conducting business.

In addition to this, I worked prolifically on invoicing clients. Not everything in the design industry is creative. A substantial amount of it is…

During week 4, I gained a significant amount of confidence in my role at BRIC. Bally and I have progressed to a strong workplace relationship, wherein I feel she trusts me to do tasks within the business that I didn’t think I would have the opportunity to gain experience in. I began the process of learning how to set-up trade accounts and how to order samples and products for clients. This specific area is one in which communication is key and I gained more confidence in my public speaking and representing BRIC via phone, which is an important aspect of…

This week I really learned that design is ever changing and that the situation is never like the text-book situation we learn about in university. Additionally, I feel like I was able to make an executive decision and when the renders were not being produced like they should, I took an initiative to better educate myself on the subject to ascertain a better result. Additionally, I also began to learn more on budget, strategy, mark-up and how a business functionally generates revenue. …

During my second week of this placement, it has really become apparent that this is my passion and the career I long to be in. I have always wanted my own business and I feel this placement is going to really help me get there. I have been taught so much in my 3 years at uni, it has definitely taught me the foundation such as: rendering, 3D modelling and AutoCAD, which I am now helping Bally and Paul with but going out and getting real industry experience is something I would recommend to every student.

Week 1

I felt a mix of anxiety and nerves beginning my first day of my placement with BRIC Interiors; entering the unknown world of the Interiors industry. Regardless, I wanted to commit to the task and set my alarm for 8:00am, after which I put on my most fashionable yet professional outfit, (bottom half up), and met the BRIC team via zoom. It was an extremely productive and fast paced week, but it was the main reason as to why I enjoyed it so much. …
